ARTIST STATEMENT

Yuen-Ying Lam’s art practice explores the difficult emotions of being human in a power-driven world. Memories and feelings are sewn into playful works that become deeply personal and poetic, many of which inspired by objects she treasured during childhood, as a remedy to give herself the nurture she needed. These participatory works are scaled to human size and soft to the touch, with the intention to provide the audience with emotional support through physical embodiment and tactile sensation, and to encourage communication and empathy though shared art experience. Her research currently lies in the impact of early upbringing and social structure on mental development, and materials and processes that are sustainable and cruelty free.
